When you should go to the ER

If you have a serious condition—stroke, heart attack, severe bleeding, head injury or other major trauma—go straight to the nearest ER! Don't take a chance with anything life-threatening. The ER is the best place for these and other critical conditions, including:

  • Abdominal pain.
  • Symptoms of stroke - sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or difficulty understanding speech. Sudden difficulty seeing out of one or both eyes. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or lack of coordination. Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Severe bleeding or head trauma.
  • Loss of consciousness.
  • Sudden loss of vision or blurred vision.
